BUILDING READING STRATEGIES

GUIDED INDEPENDENT READING
NOT "JUST RIGHT" BOOKS

Overview of this Page
As readers mature, they consciously and unconsciously build
a toolkit for approaching and making meaning of texts. The Teacher's College approach to Reading Workshop explicitly teaches a rich repertoire of skills for readers to apply across all types of text. Yet we have noticed that ELLs sometimes seem overwhelmed by the sheer volume of repertoire of strategies they hear about. They also seem to forget the strategies that are not right in front of them at the urging of teachers. Our goal with instructional strategies for this area of inquiry is to give ELLs full access to the range of reading skills that will allow them to develop a vibrant reading life. As we do so, we sometimes add more explicit instruction, but in the end our goal is full student independence in the wide world of books.
